Concrete Repair and Resurfacing in St. Catharines, Ontario
We repair cracked, sunken and worn concrete at St. Catharines homes: crack repair, slab lifting, resurfacing, step rebuilds and sealing. The oldest steps and walks are in Merritton, Port Dalhousie and downtown along St. Paul Street, on thick clay left by glacial Lake Iroquois, and the city's repeated winter thaws wear on every surface. We find the cause before we quote the fix, and we say plainly when a repair will not hold and replacement is the better spend. Union-certified crews do the work, the written quote is free, and the labour carries our lifetime warranty.

St. Catharines is a patchwork of old village cores and newer surveys, and the concrete follows the same pattern. Merritton, Port Dalhousie and the downtown blocks along St. Paul Street carry steps, walks and slabs poured generations ago. Grantham, Vansickle and the surveys filling in toward Louth are newer, but a new lot has its own kind of settling.
Much of that concrete does not need to come out. A crack can be repaired, a sunken slab lifted back to grade, a scaled surface resurfaced, and a broken step formed and re-poured. The full method for each is on our concrete repair and resurfacing page. This page is about what St. Catharines changes about the job.
Why concrete scales and cracks with so many thaws
St. Catharines sits between Lake Ontario and the escarpment, and its winter is a run of thaws instead of one long freeze. The temperature crosses zero again and again from December through March. Each time, meltwater works into the surface and the joints, freezes, and pries the concrete apart. Road salt speeds the scaling.
A surface that has only scaled can often be resurfaced. Once the damage reaches the rebar, or the slab is cracking all the way through, replacement is the honest call. We look at how deep the damage goes before we quote either one.
Steps and walks in the old canal and creek streets
Merritton grew up against the canal locks, Port Dalhousie was the lake harbour, and the downtown blocks sit above Twelve Mile Creek. Many front steps and walks on these streets are as old as the houses, and they sit on the thick clay glacial Lake Iroquois left across the city. Clay holds water and heaves with frost, so settled steps and cracked treads are common here.
A broken step edge or tread is formed and re-poured. A worn surface on a sound step or walk can be ground back and given a bonded overlay instead of a tear-out. If the ground under a step keeps moving, an overlay will not hold, so we find out why it moved before we quote.
Lifting a settled slab on filled ground
The first three Welland canals were filled in across the city, some under parks and some under major roads. Ground that was filled long ago does not always behave like undisturbed clay, and a slab on it can settle unevenly. In the newer surveys out west, the backfill around a new foundation keeps settling for a season or two.
A walk, step or pad that has dropped is often a lifting job, not a tear-out, once the ground has settled. We fill the void, bring the slab back to grade and set it so water runs away from the house. If the base keeps washing out, lifting alone will not last, and we say so.
When a crack is a foundation or water question
A crack in a walk or a garage slab is a repair job. A crack in a basement wall that leaks every spring is a different question. On the oldest streets, the clay holds melt against the wall for weeks, so what fixes it depends on the wall: an injection on one crack, regrading and downspouts, or a drainage system.

Straight answers
Should I repair or replace the cracked concrete at my St. Catharines home?
It depends on the base and how deep the damage goes. Repair wins when the damage is local and the base is still sound: one or two cracks, a slab that settled on one side, surface scaling or a broken step edge. Replacement wins when the slab has cracked all over, the base has failed, or the surface has scaled down to the rebar. The written quote says which side of that line your concrete is on, and why.
Why does my driveway or walk scale every spring when winters here are mild?
The mild winters are the cause. The city thaws and refreezes over and over from December to March, and each cycle drives meltwater into the surface and lifts thin flakes off the top. Road salt speeds it up. Scaling that has not reached the rebar can often be resurfaced, and an air-entrained mix and a sealed surface slow it down on the next pour.
Can you lift a sunken walk or slab instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. We pump material through small holes drilled in the slab to fill the void under it and float it back to grade. Before we lift, we find out why the base washed out or settled, so the slab does not sink again. If the ground under it is still moving, we say so and quote a replacement.
How much does concrete repair cost in St. Catharines?
There is no honest flat rate. The cost moves with the size of the area, how far the damage goes, the condition of the base, the repair method, access and the season. The visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
Our steps in Merritton or Port Dalhousie have settled. Can they be fixed?
Usually, yes. We check why they moved first, because these older streets sit on clay that holds water and heaves with frost. A step with a sound base can be lifted or have its treads and edges re-poured. A step on ground that keeps moving is better rebuilt, and the quote says which.
