Concrete Repair and Resurfacing in Kitchener
We repair cracked, sunken and worn concrete on Kitchener homes: crack injection, slab lifting, resurfacing, step rebuilds and sealing. Much of the work is in the old Berlin core, where century-old streets have a long history of freeze-thaw and salt. We find the cause before we quote the fix, and we tell you plainly when a repair will not hold and replacement is the better choice. The quote is free and written, you get a reply within one business day, and the labour carries our lifetime warranty.

Kitchener calls us two ways. The south-end surveys around Doon want first pours. The old Berlin core, the downtown and the heritage blocks around King Street, wants repair: a heaved walk, a settled step, a slab that has cracked at the edge.
Most of that concrete does not need to come out. A crack can be injected, a sunken slab lifted back to grade, a pitted surface ground and resurfaced, and a broken step formed and re-poured. The full method for each is on our concrete repair and resurfacing page. This page is about what Kitchener's sand, valley ground and older houses change about the job.
Why concrete on Kitchener sand cracks at the edge
Most of Kitchener sits on the sand of the Waterloo Moraine. Meltwater drains through sand instead of freezing in layers under a slab, so frost lifts concrete here less than it does on clay. What sand does instead is move. Water that runs to one spot for years, often from a downspout, carries the sand away grain by grain and leaves a hollow under a slab edge or a step. The concrete then bridges a void and cracks.
So a Kitchener repair starts underneath. We check the base, the grade and where the downspouts send their water before we quote. A crack filled over a slab that has lost its support opens again by spring; a slab lifted while a downspout keeps washing out its base sinks again.
Old Berlin core: walks, steps and century-old houses
The oldest housing in the city is in the downtown and the heritage streets around it, and the walks and steps there have been through many winters of salt and freeze-thaw. Spalled treads and broken edges are formed and re-poured with air-entrained 32 MPa mix. A worn surface on a sound walk or step can be ground back and given a bonded overlay instead of a tear-out.
The postwar streets around the core have many driveways and walks near the end of their life. If a slab has cracked all over or the base has failed across the whole area, the honest answer is replacement, and the quote will say so.
River-valley lots and wet basements
The low ground along the Grand River and the creeks that feed it has a higher water table than the sandhills above, so basements in the valley pockets stay damp where the higher streets stay dry. A crack in a walk or garage slab is a repair job. A crack in a basement wall that leaks, or one that keeps growing, is a different question.

Straight answers
Should I repair or replace the cracked concrete at my Kitchener home?
It depends on the base. Repair wins when the damage is local and the base under it is still sound: one or two cracks, a slab that settled on one side, surface pitting or a broken step edge. Replacement wins when the slab has cracked all over, the base has failed across the whole area, or the surface has scaled so deep there is nothing sound to bond to. The written quote says which side of that line your concrete is on, and why.
Why is my Kitchener slab cracking at the edge or sinking?
On Kitchener's sandy ground the usual cause is erosion, not frost. Water that runs to the same spot, often from a downspout, washes the sand out from under the slab edge or step, and the concrete cracks over the hollow. We find where the water goes and fix the base as well as the concrete.
Can you lift a sunken walk or slab instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. We pump material through small holes drilled in the slab to fill the void under it and float it back to grade. Mudjacking uses a sand-and-cement slurry and wants a day or two before traffic; polyurethane foam uses smaller holes and takes traffic the same day. Before we lift, we find out why the base washed out, so the slab does not sink again.
How much does concrete repair cost in Kitchener?
There is no honest flat rate. The cost moves with the size of the area, how far the damage goes, the condition of the base, the repair method, access and the season. The visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
