Concrete Removal & Demolition in Fergus
We break out and haul away old driveways, patios, walkways, steps and slabs across Fergus. Near the Grand River gorge and the stone core, the job means working around shallow limestone and damp ground. On the newer Centre Wellington lots, it can mean taking out a narrow strip or a small pad to make room for a bigger pour. Quotes are free and written, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

Fergus sits on drumlin clay-loam over limestone, and near the Grand River gorge the rock is close to the surface. That changes a tear-out. Clay-loam holds water and lifts a slab when frost gets under a thin base,. Near the gorge, we hit bedrock sooner than we would on deep clay, which shapes how the dig is planned. See our Fergus page for everything else we do in town.
The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Fergus ground and Fergus homes change about that job.
The stone core and the gorge: steps, aprons and old slabs
Around St. Andrew Street and down toward the river are stone and century homes. Old steps, aprons and slabs beside a limestone foundation are handled with care, and where worn steps can be rebuilt to their original lines, we say so rather than tear them out.
Close to the gorge, the water table is higher and the spring damp heavier than up the hill. If an old slab sat against a limestone wall, we look at the wall and the drainage once the concrete is out, so the new work does not push water toward the foundation. See basement waterproofing in Fergus for the wall side of that problem.
Clay-loam and shallow rock: rebuilding the base after the tear-out
On the higher lots, the clay-loam holds water, so base depth and compaction decide whether the next slab rides out the winters. When new concrete is going back in, we check the base under the old slab and top it up, re-compact it and grade it for drainage before the new pour. That is decided on site, lot by lot.
Where limestone is near the surface, the dig stops sooner and the water has to go somewhere, so the grade is planned before the new pour. See concrete patios in Fergus for what goes back in.
New Centre Wellington lots: making room for the bigger pour
In the new subdivisions, a lot can be finished without the concrete a family wants. Removal there can mean a narrow driveway or a small pad coming out ahead of a patio, a wider driveway or a garage pad. Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, and you pay for one mobilization, not two.
Fergus jobs book onto our Wellington County routes through Centre Wellington. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.
Straight answers
Can the old stone steps at my Fergus home be repaired instead of removed?
Sometimes. Worn steps can be rebuilt to their original lines in some cases and not in others. We look at them at the free site visit and tell you straight whether a repair or a replacement is the better choice.
Does the base need to change after old concrete comes out on Fergus clay-loam?
When new concrete is going back in, yes, the base needs attention. Clay-loam holds water, and frost that reaches under a thin base lifts a slab. We check the base under the old concrete, then top it up, re-compact it and grade it for drainage before the new pour. That is decided on site.
How much does concrete removal cost in Fergus?
The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.
What happens to the old concrete?
Old concrete does not go to landfill. It goes to a recycler and comes back as road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free first.
