Concrete Driveways in Oakville

We pour new, widened and replacement concrete driveways across Oakville, from the older lakeside streets to the new builds north of Dundas. The ground here is Halton clay, so the base decides how long a driveway lasts, and a change to the apron needs a Town permit. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Most of Oakville sits on Halton till, a silty clay over soft shale. Clay drains slowly and swells when it is wet, and frost lifts a slab that sits on a shallow base. So an Oakville driveway is decided under the concrete, not on pour day.

The full spec lives on our concrete driveways page. This page is about what an Oakville driveway needs in particular: the clay, the creeks, the two kinds of street, and the Town's permit for the apron.

A base built for Halton clay

We excavate to stable ground, then place 150 to 200 mm of Granular A and compact it in lifts. We grade the base so water drains away from the slab and the house. Then we pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix for slabs that live with freeze-thaw and road salt, and saw-cut the control joints before the slab cracks on its own.

Sixteen Mile Creek and Bronte Creek cut through the town to the lake, and the low ground near them holds more water in spring. On those lots, drainage gets extra care.

The Town permit for the apron

The apron is the part of the driveway between your property line and the road, on Town land. In Oakville, a new driveway, or one you widen, narrow or replace in that strip, needs a permit from the Town's Transportation and Engineering Department. Resurfacing an existing apron with no other change needs none.

The application needs a scaled plan of the driveway, the business licence number of the contractor, and a security deposit. A residential curb cut must be done by a Town licensed contractor. We plan the apron work into the quote, so the permit is not a surprise after you sign.

Older streets in the south, new builds in the north

In Old Oakville, Bronte, Glen Abbey, River Oaks and Joshua Creek, many driveways have reached the end of their life. Replacing one starts with tear-out: we break out the old slab, haul it away, fix what made it fail, and pour fresh.

North of Dundas, in The Preserve, Glenorchy, Joshua's Meadows and Oakvillage, the lots are built on disturbed clay fill. Owners there ask us to widen the drive once the builder sets the final grade. We compact that base mechanically instead of trusting the fill. On the higher-end streets, many owners choose a stamped or decorative finish to suit the house.

We reach Oakville on our Halton routes from the Burlington side. Where trucks or trailers park, we pour 125 mm instead of 100 mm. Stay off the new slab on foot for 24 to 48 hours, and keep vehicles off longer.

Questions

Straight answers

Do I need a permit to widen my driveway in Oakville?

If the work changes the apron on Town land, yes. Widening, narrowing, replacing or adding a driveway in the road allowance needs a permit from the Town's Transportation and Engineering Department. Resurfacing an existing apron with no other change does not. We plan the apron work into your quote.

Why do Oakville driveways crack and heave?

Most of the town sits on clay. It holds water, swells, and lets frost lift a slab on a shallow base. We excavate to stable ground, compact a Granular A base in lifts, and grade it so water drains away.

We just moved into a new build north of Dundas. When can we widen the driveway?

Wait until the builder sets the final grade and the lot has settled. The new surveys sit on disturbed clay fill, so we compact the base mechanically instead of trusting it.

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Oakville?

Size, finish, access, tear-out of an old slab, the base the ground needs and the apron work set the number. A figure online would only mislead you. We give you a written number after a free visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
