Concrete Driveways in Grimsby
We pour new and replacement concrete driveways across Grimsby, from the new lots on Grimsby Mountain and in Nelles Estates to the older streets below the escarpment. The build depends on where your lot sits: well-drained loam on the old fruit flats, heavier wet ground near the slope and the Forty Mile Creek ravine, and salt and freeze spray at the lake end. Union-certified crews, a free written quote that holds, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Grimsby sits on a narrow shelf between Lake Ontario and the foot of the Niagara Escarpment, and the ground changes across that short distance. A driveway that suits a lot on the old fruit flats can heave on a lot near the creek ravine. So we look at the lot before we quote.
The concrete is the same everywhere: 32 MPa air-entrained, on a compacted Granular A base, with joints cut where the slab wants to crack. The full spec is on our concrete driveways page; this page is about what a Grimsby driveway needs in particular.
Fruit flats, slope and creek: the ground under the slab
The old fruit flats carry a sandy and silty loam over clay, the soil that grew the orchards. It drains well enough, so on those lots the work goes mostly into honest grading and a clean edge, so melt runs off the slab and away from the house.
Closer to the escarpment slope and the Forty Mile Creek ravine, the ground turns heavier and wetter. A slab on that ground without depth and compaction will heave in the first hard winter. There we excavate to stable ground and build 150 to 200 mm of Granular A in compacted lifts before we pour. Same town, two different builds.
New lots up the slope, older streets below
On Grimsby Mountain and in Nelles Estates, many lots are new, and the ground is still settling. Owners often want the driveway the builder left off, or a wider one. On new fill we compact the base mechanically instead of trusting it, and we saw control joints so the slab cracks where we choose.
On the heritage blocks near the old core and toward Grimsby Beach, the work is more often a replacement. We break out the old slab, haul it away, fix what cracked or lifted it, and pour fresh. Where trucks or trailers park, we pour 125 mm instead of 100 mm.
Salt and spray at the lake end
The north end of town takes freeze spray off the lake through the winter, and road salt with it. Air-entrained concrete is the defence: the small air voids give freezing water room to expand, so the surface does not flake. Keep salt off a new slab in its first winter.
Grimsby is the first stop when our crews come into Niagara along the lakeshore from the Hamilton end, so in season a driveway here books onto the next regular run. Keep vehicles off a new slab for at least 48 hours.
Straight answers
Does it matter where in Grimsby our lot is?
Yes. On the old fruit flats the sandy loam over clay drains well, so the slab heaves less and the work goes into grading. Near the escarpment slope and the Forty Mile Creek ravine the ground holds water, so that lot needs a deeper compacted base. We decide the base after we see the lot.
We have a new home on Grimsby Mountain. Can you pour the driveway the builder left off?
Yes, once your final grade is set. New fill keeps settling for a season or two, so we compact the base mechanically and cut control joints to steer where the slab cracks. We can widen the drive at the same time.
Our old driveway below the escarpment has cracked and lifted. Can you replace it?
Yes. We tear out and haul away the old slab, find what lifted it, and fix that before we pour. The new driveway goes on an excavated, compacted granular base graded to drain. Tear-out and disposal go in the written quote.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Grimsby?
Size sets the start, then the finish, the base your ground needs, access, and whether an old slab has to come out. A lot near the creek ravine can need a deeper base than one on the fruit flats. We do not post a flat rate. A written quote comes after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay unless you change the job.
