Concrete Patios in Grimsby
We pour concrete patios across Grimsby, from the new backyards on Grimsby Mountain and in Nelles Estates to the condos and towns off Casablanca Boulevard and the older streets below the escarpment. The base depends on where your lot sits: well-drained loam on the old fruit flats, heavier wet ground near the slope and the Forty Mile Creek ravine, and settling fill on new lots. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Grimsby sits on a narrow shelf between Lake Ontario and the foot of the Niagara Escarpment, and the ground changes across that short distance. A patio base that suits a lot on the old fruit flats is not enough on a lot near the creek ravine. So we look at the backyard before we quote.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm slab, the compacted Granular A base and the slope of about 2 percent away from the house, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what Grimsby's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
Fruit flats, slope and creek: the ground under the patio
The old fruit flats carry a sandy and silty loam over clay, the soil that grew the orchards. It drains well enough, so on those lots a patio asks less of a deep frost base and more of honest grading: the slab slopes away from the house, and its runoff goes somewhere it does no harm.
Closer to the escarpment slope and the Forty Mile Creek ravine, the ground turns heavier and wetter. A slab poured on that ground without depth and compaction will heave in the first hard winter. There we dig to stable ground and compact the granular base in layers before we pour. Same town, two different builds.
New backyards up the slope and at the lake
On Grimsby Mountain and in Nelles Estates, many lots are new, and a real patio is often the concrete the builder left off. The same goes for the condos and towns off Casablanca Boulevard, where the flats near the lake were built up over old orchard ground. New fill keeps settling for a season or two. We wait until your final grade is set, compact the base mechanically instead of trusting it, and saw control joints so the slab cracks where we choose.
On the older blocks near the old core and toward Grimsby Beach, a new patio often replaces an old one. We break out and haul away the old slab, then rebuild the base while the ground is open, compacted in lifts and graded for drainage, before we pour. If the old patio sloped toward the house, the new one does not.
Finish, salt and when to book
Broom finish gives grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture. Stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it. At the north end of town, freeze spray off the lake and road salt wear at a surface through the winter. Air-entrained concrete is the defence: its small air voids give freezing water room to expand, so the surface does not flake.
Foot traffic can go on a new patio after 24 to 48 hours, furniture after 7 days, and we seal it at about 28 days. Grimsby is the first stop when our crews come into Niagara along the lakeshore from the Hamilton end, so in season a patio here books onto the next regular run. The lake end books up fast, so quoting in spring usually gets you a better summer slot.
Straight answers
Does it matter where in Grimsby our backyard is?
Yes. On the old fruit flats the sandy loam over clay drains well, so the work goes mostly into grading the patio away from the house. Near the escarpment slope and the Forty Mile Creek ravine the ground holds water, so that lot needs a deeper, compacted base. We decide the base after we see the lot.
We bought a new townhouse off Casablanca. Can you pour a patio on the fill?
Yes, once your final grade is set. The flats near the lake were built up over old orchard ground, and recent fill keeps settling for a season or two. So we compact the base mechanically instead of trusting it, and saw control joints to steer where the slab cracks.
Can you replace an old cracked patio below the escarpment?
Yes. We break out and haul away the old slab, then rebuild the base while the ground is open, compacted in lifts and graded for drainage, before we pour. The new patio goes on a compacted granular base, sloped about 2 percent away from the house.
How much does a concrete patio cost in Grimsby?
Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, and the base your ground needs all move the number, and an old slab that has to come out adds to it. Broom finish is the most affordable; exposed aggregate and stamped work cost more. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay unless you change the job.
