Concrete Walkways & Steps in Toronto
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps, porches and entrances across Toronto. On the century brick homes of the Annex, Riverdale and the Beaches, steps can pull away or wear down with freeze and thaw. East York, Scarborough and North York have postwar bungalow districts, where frost can crack a path or heave a landing. Quotes are free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Toronto sits on the flat lowland an ancient lake left along Lake Ontario, and the ground there runs to fine clay and silt. Clay holds spring melt and rain, and when that water freezes it lifts whatever sits on it. Where a downspout empties beside the steps or a walkway, we check where that water goes. See our Toronto page for everything else we do in the city.
The full method for footings, riser heights, mix and thickness is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page covers what Toronto ground and Toronto homes change about that job.
Brick homes: steps that pull away from the house
In the Annex, Riverdale, Leslieville and the Beaches, many homes are brick houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Steps and walks beside them face freeze and thaw, and road salt carried in on boots wears the surface. The usual signs are a gap between the steps and the house, a landing that tips toward the door, and spalled treads.
New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down, or get doweled into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail. That stops them moving as the ground freezes and thaws. Water held against steps is water held against the wall, so we also look at the wall. If it already lets water in, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Toronto at the same visit.
Bungalow streets and ravine lots: paths and landings that heave
East York, Scarborough and North York have postwar bungalow districts. Once frost gets under a path or stoop panel, it can lift and crack it, and water widens the crack every winter. Near the Don, the Humber and the smaller ravines the ground stays damp well into the season, which makes it worse.
A freestanding walkway floats on a compacted granular base, with 100 mm (4 in.) of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete on top and a slope so water runs off it, not along its edge. Where an old path has to come out first, the tear-out is part of the quote; see concrete removal in Toronto.
Repair, relevel or rebuild?
Not every worn or sunken step needs replacing. A porch with spalled corners and a sound slab can often be resurfaced. Steps that are cracked through, or that have been taking water into their body for years, get rebuilt on proper footings.
We tell you which one you have at the free site visit. The written quote names each part, the steps, the walkway and the tear-out, so you can compare it with anyone else's. Toronto is the far end of our range, so jobs here go onto planned trips with real dates, not a same-week promise. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why have my front steps pulled away from my Annex house?
On clay, it is usually frost lifting steps that sit on shallow ground, or water from a downspout softening the clay beside them. The fix is steps on footings below the frost line, or doweled to the foundation, with the water moved away. We check both at the site visit.
My Scarborough front walk is cracked and heaving. Repair or replace?
It depends how far gone it is. Frost lifts a path wherever it gets under it. Sound steps that only settled can sometimes be relevelled, and a spalled surface can be resurfaced. Panels that are cracked through get removed and poured again on a compacted base. We tell you straight which one you have.
How much do new concrete steps cost in Toronto?
Steps are quoted by the job, not by area. The number of risers, the total height, the footings, the drainage work and the tear-out of the old set drive the cost more than size does. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
Can you rebuild the front walkway and steps together?
Yes. Doing them as one project lets us set the path grade, landing height, riser spacing and drainage together, instead of making new work meet a failed piece. The written quote can show the walkway and the steps separately, so you see what each part adds.
