Concrete Walkways & Steps in King Township

My Concrete Pros builds concrete walkways, front steps and porches across King Township, from long paths on estate lots to steps and entrances on farmhouses and village homes in King City, Nobleton and Schomberg. Most of King sits on the loose sand and gravel of the Oak Ridges Moraine, so we contain and compact the base, and we set footings below the frost line where steps attach to the house. Quotes are free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Walkways and steps in King Township sit on different ground than most of York Region. Most of the township is on the Oak Ridges Moraine, a long ridge of glacial sand and gravel that drains fast. Water soaks through it instead of sitting in clay, so a path is less likely to heave on trapped frost. The risk is that loose sand can settle or wash out from under the edges of a slab if the base is not held and packed.

Our full method for paths, risers and porches is on the concrete walkways and steps page: 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, a compacted granular base, and footings below the frost line wherever steps attach to the house. This page covers what King's sand, its long rural approaches and its older farmhouses change about that job.

Moraine sand: hold the edges, pack the base

Loose sand can settle or wash out under a slab if the base is not contained and compacted. On a King walkway we remove the soft topsoil, build a compacted granular base and hold the edges so the sand stays put. Then we set the slope so water sheds off the path and does not channel along it.

Out toward the Holland Marsh the ground is soft, wet organic soil, not sand, and it needs its own approach. We check which ground you have on the site visit, before we quote.

Long paths on estate and farm lots

Many King homes sit well back from the road on large acreages, so the walk from the drive or the road to the front door can be long. Access for the concrete truck is part of the plan. We walk the route on the site visit and work out how the concrete gets there before we give you a number.

A path poured the same day as a patio or a garage or barn pad shares the truck and the base crew, which helps on a trip this far out.

Farmhouse and village steps: footings first

Frost in Southern Ontario reaches about four feet down in a cold winter. The house sits on footings below that line, and surface steps do not, so every winter the house holds still while the steps move and the gap between them opens. That gap sends water down the foundation wall.

For new steps and porches that attach to the house, we dig footings to about 1.2 metres or tie the steps to the foundation, and we set every riser to the same height. If the porch is sound and only the surface is breaking down, repair and resurfacing may be the better answer, and we say so before anyone talks money. If an old set of steps has to come out first, see concrete removal in King.

King is a planned trip, so book ahead

King sits well north of our home routes, so we book township jobs into planned trips with dates set in advance, not a same-week promise. Steps and walkways are small pours, and booking yours with another pour on the same trip makes the trip worth more to you. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

My King lot is sand. Does that change how you build a walkway?

Yes. Moraine sand drains fast, so water is less likely to freeze under the slab and lift it. But loose sand can settle or wash out under the edges. We contain the edges, compact a granular base and slope the surface so rain runs off the path and not along it.

Our farmhouse steps have pulled away from the house. Why?

Steps poured at the surface move with the frost while the house, on footings below the frost line, stays put. The gap that opens lets water run down the foundation wall. New steps that attach to the house get footings to about 1.2 metres or are tied to the foundation, so they move with the house.

Can you reach a front door that is far back from the road?

We plan that on the site visit. We walk the route from the road to the door and work out how the concrete gets there.

How much does a concrete walkway or set of steps cost in King?

We do not post a flat number, because every job differs. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
