Waterloo has two kinds of foundation to know. The older streets around the universities hold decades-old houses, many split into rentals, where foundations have settled and parging has flaked off the exposed block. The west-end surveys at Vista Hills, Clair Hills and Laurelwood are newer, and a new foundation can show thin cracks in its first year or two.
Most foundation cracks are not emergencies. The job is to tell the normal ones apart from the ones that matter: cracks that grow every season, cracks that leak, horizontal cracks, and stair-step cracks through block.

What Waterloo's sand means for a foundation job
Waterloo is built on the Waterloo Moraine, a thick deposit of glacial sand and gravel. Sand drains faster than clay.
Loose sand can wash out when runoff channels across it. So a repair starts with a look at the ground outside the wall as well as the crack inside. We check where the downspouts drop their water and whether the ground slopes toward the house.

Near Laurel Creek and Silver Lake, the water table runs higher than on the sandhills above. A leak there may be more than one crack. When water comes in at several places, the job has become basement waterproofing, and that page covers it.
