Concrete Walkways & Steps in Paris, Ontario

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and entrances across Paris, from spalled steps on the older streets near the forks of the Grand and Nith to a first front walk on a new lot in Scenic Ridge. Steps that meet the house sit on footings below the frost line, and every path gets a compacted granular base and a slope that sheds water. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Entrance work in Paris comes from two places. In the older blocks of the upper and lower town, the call is usually a repair or a replacement: front steps poured generations ago that have spalled or tipped, or a walk that has heaved. In Scenic Ridge, Scenic Ridge East and Mile Hill, owners of new homes want the path, landing or steps the builder did not finish.

The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the granular base and the uniform risers, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Paris ground and Paris homes change about an entrance. The free written quote covers jobs as small as one set of steps.

Older Paris: spalled steps and heaved walks

The streets near the forks hold homes with foundations of the same vintage as the town's river-stone buildings. Steps poured against those walls long ago are often spalled, cracked or pulling away from the door. The soil beside a foundation is backfill, and it keeps settling, so steps poured straight onto it sink and tip.

So we look at where water goes before we pour: the slope of the walk and of each tread, and where the downspouts empty. A rebuilt entrance starts with tear-out and disposal of the old steps, then firm ground, a compacted granular base and, wherever the steps attach to the house, footings below the frost line. Tear-out is covered in our concrete removal in Paris page.

Clay that holds water and lifts a thin base

The clay loam under central Brant holds spring moisture for weeks and freezes deep in a cold winter. Where both rivers run high, the water table under the lower streets rises too. A walk on a skimped base is lifted by frost and cracks when it settles.

We dig to solid material, compact the granular base in lifts and pour air-entrained 32 MPa mix, then saw control joints so the slab does not choose its own crack lines.

New lots in Scenic Ridge and Mile Hill

Subdivision ground is disturbed soil that keeps settling for a few seasons. A walkway or landing poured too early can sink at the door, so we wait until the builder has set the final grade and compact the base mechanically instead of trusting it.

We can add a path to a side or rear door, build a landing, or pour steps on the same compacted base. A walkway rides on the same trip as a patio, so tell us the whole list at the site visit.

Questions

Straight answers

Can my cracked or spalled front steps in Paris be repaired, or do they need replacing?

It depends on the steps. Sound steps that have only settled can sometimes be lifted, while steps that have failed need rebuilding. We tell you plainly which kind yours is at the site visit, and the free written quote sets out the options.

We just closed on a new build in Scenic Ridge. When should we pour a walkway?

After the builder sets your final grade, and usually after you have seen how water runs across the lot. Subdivision ground keeps settling for a few seasons, so we compact the base mechanically before pouring.

Why do walks and steps heave on the lower streets near the rivers?

Mostly water in the clay. The clay loam holds spring moisture and freezes deep in a cold winter, and frost lifts a slab on a thin base. The fix is a base dug to solid ground and compacted in lifts, a slope that moves water away from the house, and air-entrained 32 MPa concrete.

How much do new concrete steps or a walkway cost in Paris?

The number of risers, the height of the whole assembly, tear-out of the old steps, whether footings are needed, the finish and access to the entrance all change it. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on it is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
