Concrete Walkways & Steps in Norwich
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps, porches and entrances across Norwich Township, from Norwich village to Otterville, Burgessville and Springford. The ground changes the job: clay north of the village heaves with frost, and sand around Otterville washes out from under edges. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Norwich Township is farm country with a few villages in it. In Norwich village and Otterville, the older homes bring front steps, porches and walks that have been through many winters. At the edge of Norwich village, infill builds are adding new entrances. See our Norwich page for everything else we do in the township.
Steps and walkways are the concrete your family touches every day. The full method, mix and specs are on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page covers what Norwich ground and Norwich homes change about that job.
North of the village: clay that heaves
The north half of the township is clay and clay-loam. This ground heaves under frost, drains slowly and presses water against foundation walls. Steps that attach to the house need footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down, or need to be doweled into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail. Steps poured at the surface move on their own every winter, and the joint at the house opens up.
That gap catches water off the landing and sends it down the foundation wall. So we check the drainage at the door as part of the steps, not after.
South around Otterville: sand that washes out
The south half, around Otterville, is sandy ground. Sand drains fast, so frost heave troubles it less. But sand erodes. Where a downspout or the yard's runoff concentrates at a step or a walk edge, the sand can wash out from under it, and one corner drops.
On sand, the effort goes into protecting the edges and moving the water. We look at where the downspouts empty before we set the base, so the new work does not fail the same way.
Village homes: steps, porches and walks
Otterville keeps a core of older homes, which means steps, porches and walks that need work. A freestanding walkway does not need frost footings. It floats on a compacted granular base, with 100 mm (4 in.) of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete on top, sloped so meltwater leaves instead of icing the steps.
Not every sunken or worn step needs replacing. Steps that are sound but settled can sometimes be lifted back into place. Spalled corners on a sound slab can often be resurfaced. Steps that are cracked through get rebuilt on proper footings. We tell you which one you have at the free site visit, before any talk of money.
Straight answers
Do you take small jobs in Norwich, like one set of front steps?
Yes. Township stops ride the same scheduled routes as the bigger towns, so a step rebuild in Norwich or a walkway panel in Otterville books like any other job. It gets a written number before anyone lifts a tool.
Why are my front steps sinking or pulling away from the house?
On clay north of Norwich village, steps poured above the frost line ride up and down with the ground while the house stays put. On sand around Otterville, water often washes the sand out from under one corner. Either way, the fix is to relevel or rebuild the steps and to deal with the water, so the new work does not fail the same way.
Can you rebuild the front walkway and steps together?
Yes. Doing them as one project lets us set the path grade, landing height, riser spacing and drainage together, instead of making new work meet a failed piece. The written quote can show the walkway and the steps separately, so you see what each part adds.
How much do new concrete steps cost in Norwich?
Steps are quoted by the job, not by area. The number of risers, the total height, the footings and the tear-out of the old set drive the cost more than size does. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
