Below the escarpment: settled steps and tired walks
The older streets hold the town's older homes, and the ground is not one thing. Closer to the escarpment slope and the Forty Mile Creek ravine it turns heavier and wetter and holds water against a wall for longer. Steps poured onto loose backfill beside a wet wall tend to settle and tip away from the door, and the gap that opens sends water down the foundation wall.
So we look at where water goes before we pour: the slope of the walk and of each tread, and the downspouts that empty onto it. A rebuilt entrance starts with tear-out and disposal of the old steps, then firm ground, a compacted granular base and, wherever the steps attach to the house, footings below the frost line. Grimsby Mountain and Nelles Estates: new lots
The newer streets are home to newer builds, and the soil beside any foundation is backfill, which is never as solid as undisturbed ground. Steps or a landing poured against the house sit on a compacted granular base, and we check that base before pouring.

Why have my front steps on an older Grimsby street settled or pulled away from the house?
Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation. The backfill settles, and the steps tip away from the door, opening a gap that sends water down the foundation wall. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.

Once the base is properly compacted and you know where you want the path, landing or steps. We check the compacted base before pouring, because soil beside a foundation is backfill and never as solid as undisturbed ground.
