Concrete Walkways & Steps in Fort Erie

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porches across Fort Erie, from the older Bridgeburg blocks to the shore cottages at Crystal Beach and the rural lots near Stevensville. Near the beaches the ground is sandier and drains quickly. Inland it is shallow over a clay subsoil that holds water and heaves with frost. We check which ground your entrance sits on, then build the base and footings to suit it. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Fort Erie is a string of separate communities, and the ground under them changes from one to the next. Near the Lake Erie beaches the soil is sandier and drains quickly. Inland, the soil is shallow over a clay subsoil, and clay holds water against a house and lifts concrete when frost gets under it.

That matters at a front door more than almost anywhere. Steps and a walk are small pours, but they sit right where the house, the ground and the weather meet.

The full method, the footings, riser heights, mix and thickness, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what a Fort Erie entrance needs in particular. See our Fort Erie page for everything else we do in town.

Inland clay: steps need footings that move with the house

Your house sits on footings below the frost line. Steps that only sit on clay do not, so they rise and drop each winter while the house stays put. That pulls them away from the door and opens a gap that can send water down the foundation wall.

New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings to about 1.2 metres, or are doweled into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail for the site.

Shore sand at Crystal Beach and Bay Beach

Near the beaches the ground is sandier and drains more quickly, so water does not sit under a walk the way it does on clay. The work there goes into a well-compacted base and honest grading, so the walk does not settle or wash out at its edges.

Many shore properties are older cottages. Our concrete repair and resurfacing page for Fort Erie covers repair work on tired steps and porches.

Older Bridgeburg entrances: watch where the water goes

Bridgeburg and the older central streets have foundations that go back to the railway era, on the clay subsoil that stays wet after the spring melt.

If a basement wall already lets water in, we tell you at the visit, and we may suggest looking at basement waterproofing in Fort Erie first.

Lake Erie winters: mix and finish

Winters off Lake Erie bring snowstorms, wind and blown ice, and road salt adds to the freeze-thaw cycle. So we pour on a compacted granular base with 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the same exterior standard as our driveways, in a 100 mm (4 in.) walkway slab.

Questions

Straight answers

Why are my front steps in Bridgeburg pulling away from the house?

Steps that only sit on the ground can move each winter while the house stays put, because inland Fort Erie sits on a clay subsoil that heaves when frost gets into it. Rebuilt steps get footings to about 1.2 metres, or are doweled into the foundation wall, so they move with the house.

Does a Crystal Beach cottage on sand need different steps than a house inland?

The base is built differently. Sandier shore ground drains quickly, so the focus is compaction and grading. Inland clay holds water and heaves, so footings and drainage matter more. We look at which ground your lot is on before we quote.

Do you give a free quote for steps and walkways in Fort Erie?

Yes. You get a free written quote, and the quote number is the invoice number unless the job changes. Fort Erie is the far end of the Niagara peninsula for us, so a job here books into our regular Niagara schedule through the pouring season.
