Concrete Walkways & Steps in Fonthill
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps, porches and entrances across Fonthill. The town sits on the Fonthill Kame, a glacial hill of sand and gravel that drains fast and heaves less than Niagara clay, so the main risk to a walk or step here is washed-out bedding, not deep frost. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Most of Niagara sits on clay. Fonthill does not. The town is built on the Fonthill Kame, a glacial hill of sand and gravel that rises about 75 metres over the flat country around it. Water moves down through that ground instead of sitting in it, so frost has a hard time building the ice under a slab that lifts it.
That changes what goes wrong with a walk or a set of steps. On clay, steps heave. On the kame, they more often settle because the bedding under them has washed out, or because tree roots and an old pour have run out of life.
The full method, footings, mix and thickness, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what a Fonthill entrance needs in particular.
Steps on free-draining ground still need a plan
Your house sits on footings below the frost line. Front steps that only rest on the surface do not. Sand and gravel heave far less than clay, but steps that attach to the house still get footings dug to about 1.2 metres, or get doweled into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail for the site. We check which one you have at the free site visit.
Older streets on the kame: repair or rebuild?
Up the hill, the older core off Highway 20 and the homes near Lookout Point send us the repair list: front steps that have shifted, and walks broken up by tree roots and age. Sand and gravel heave less than clay, so a shifted step here is more often eroded bedding, roots or an old pour than deep frost.
Steps that are sound but settled can sometimes be lifted back, and spalled corners on a sound slab can often be resurfaced. Once a walk is broken across several panels or the base has washed out beneath it, removal and a fresh pour on recompacted granular is the honest call. Tear-out and disposal of the old set are in the written quote.
Edges and runoff on the hill
Loose sand and gravel washes. On the steeper south and east faces of the kame, a poured edge with no containment can have its base scoured out from under it over a few wet springs. We thicken and contain the edge, compact the bedding, and grade so runoff leaves the walk instead of cutting along its side.
New lots in East Fonthill
East Fonthill, with Summersides Village, Saffron Estates and the newer surveys, is the growth side of town. Lots there close as graded dirt, and a front walk is often the first piece of flatwork added after move-in. Wait until the builder has set the final grade and you have watched how water moves across the lot. New-survey ground is disturbed soil that keeps settling for a season or two, so we compact the bedding mechanically rather than trust fresh backfill.
Built for salt and freeze-thaw
Freeze-thaw and winter road salt punish concrete in Fonthill the same as anywhere in Niagara. We pour a compacted granular base and 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, with a 100 mm (4 in.) walkway slab and sawn control joints. Skip de-icing salt on new concrete the first winter and use sand for grip.
Straight answers
Fonthill sits on sand and gravel, not clay. Do my steps still need footings?
If they attach to the house, yes. Sand and gravel heave far less than clay, but steps that rest on the surface still move independently of the house. New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings to about 1.2 metres or are doweled into the foundation wall. Freestanding walkway slabs can float on a drained, compacted base.
Our older Fonthill front steps and walk have shifted. Repair or replace?
It depends what moved and why. On the kame it is more often eroded bedding, tree roots or an aging pour than deep frost. Sound steps that only settled can sometimes be lifted back, and surface spalling can be resurfaced. A walk broken across several panels or with a washed-out base is removed and poured again on recompacted granular. We tell you which after we see it.
We just closed on a new build in East Fonthill. When can we pour a front walk?
After the builder has set the final grade, and usually after the first spring so you can see how water moves across the lot. New-survey ground keeps settling for a season or two.
How much do new concrete steps cost in Fonthill?
Steps are quoted by the job. The number of risers, the total height, whether they need footings or dowels, the tear-out of the old set and the finish drive the cost. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
