Parging in Fergus
We re-parge the exposed foundation band on Fergus homes: the grey strip of mortar above grade that cracks, sounds hollow and comes off in sheets. We strip it back to sound material and bond the new coat so it stays, and on a limestone house we match the wall instead of skinning it over. The quote is free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Fergus has two kinds of foundation, and parging wears differently on each. Down by the Grand River gorge, the oldest homes were built of local limestone. Up the hill and out toward the edges of town, newer homes sit on drumlin clay-loam. See our Fergus page for everything else we do in town.
The full method, from bonding agent to coat thickness to mesh, is on our parging page. This page is about why parging fails on Fergus walls, and what we do so the new coat lasts.
Why parging comes off Fergus foundations
Parging is a sacrificial skin. It takes the weather and the road salt so the wall behind it does not have to.
Fergus sits on drumlin clay-loam over limestone, and the clay-loam holds water against the foundation. Add the freeze-thaw and road salt of a hard Centre Wellington winter, and the coat gets worked from behind. When water gets between the coat and the wall and freezes, it pushes the coat off in sheets. The old coat goes a patch at a time: hollow when you tap it, grey flakes in the garden bed, bare wall where it has already gone. Painting over it seals moisture in instead of out, and the next freeze works underneath where you cannot see it.
Limestone homes by the gorge
The Grand River cut down to limestone bedrock in Fergus, and the oldest homes near St. Andrew Street and the gorge were built of the same stone. The homes close to the river sit nearer the water table, so they carry more spring damp than the homes up the hill. That damp is what wears at old parging on a stone wall.
We sound the whole exposed band and strip every hollow or loose patch back to solid material, then clean off dust and old coating. Loose mortar in the stone joints is a repair of its own, and we look at it before any new coat goes on. The wall is dampened and given a bonding agent, because fresh mortar will not hold a dry, dirty face on its own. Fibreglass mesh goes over patches, filled voids and changes in material. The coat goes on a quarter to three-eighths of an inch thick, in two passes on a rough wall.
If the parging keeps failing in the same spot, or water is coming in below grade, the coat is not the whole problem. We tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Fergus as part of the same visit.
Newer homes in Centre Wellington subdivisions
Centre Wellington has been one of the busier building townships in the county, and many Fergus homes are young. If the parging on a newer Fergus home has cracked or chipped, we can give you a free written quote.
Booking a Fergus parging job
Fergus books onto our Wellington County routes through Centre Wellington, so a parging job drops into the regular schedule. Fresh parging needs frost-free weather to cure, so the work runs from roughly mid-April to October. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
My parging is coming off in sheets. How urgent is that?
Water that gets behind the coat freezes and pops whole sheets off the wall, so more comes off each winter. Re-parging is a small job, and we treat it like a real one: we strip everything loose, bond the new coat and give you a written quote.
Can you re-parge an old limestone foundation in Fergus?
Yes. We look at the actual wall first, strip the coat back to sound material, repair loose joints where they need it and bond a fresh coat so it sheds water again. Where water is coming in, we say so and look at waterproofing at the same visit.
What does parging cost in Fergus?
We do not quote a flat rate. The quote spells out the prep work, not a one-line "parge wall". The visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
Can I just paint over the crumbling parging?
No. Paint seals moisture in instead of out, and the next freeze works underneath where you cannot see it. Plan on stripping back to sound material before anything new goes on.
