Concrete Walkways & Steps in Waterdown

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps, porches and entrances across Waterdown. On the clay over limestone at the escarpment edge, steps need footings below the frost line; on newer lots, the builder fill needs a season to settle before a walk is poured. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Waterdown entrance work splits in two. In the newer surveys, such as the Waterdown Bay lands on the east side of town, owners often want a first front walk or a proper set of steps once the landscaping stage arrives. In the old village around Mill Street and Dundas Street, the call is usually to rebuild steps and walks that have reached the end of their life.

Under both sits ground that moves. The full method, footings, mix and thickness, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what a Waterdown entrance needs in particular.

Steps on escarpment clay need footings below the frost line

Waterdown sits right on the escarpment edge, on clay over limestone. Clay heaves when frost gets under it, and front steps that only sit on the ground move each winter while the house stays put.

New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings dug to about 1.2 metres, below the frost line, or are tied to the structure itself, so they move with the house and not with the clay.

New lots and settling builder fill

On newer lots the ground is disturbed builder backfill that keeps settling for a season or two after closing. We compact the base mechanically rather than trust fresh ground, and we suggest letting the lot settle through a season after the builder sets the final grade before pouring a walk.

A quote in spring is a good plan: the lot has had time to settle, and you get a better slot before the summer pour season fills up.

Older village entrances: repair or rebuild?

The old village carries heritage housing, where the work is repair and replacement done to suit an older home. Not every set of steps needs replacing: steps that are sound but settled, or a porch with spalled corners on a sound slab, may be repaired instead. Steps cracked through get torn out and rebuilt on proper footings.

We tell you which one you have at the free site visit. Tear-out and disposal of the old steps are in the written quote.

Built for salt and freeze-thaw

Escarpment-edge freeze-thaw and road salt from the highways are hard on a front walk. We pour a compacted granular base and 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the same exterior standard as our driveways, with a 100 mm (4 in.) walkway slab. Near the Grindstone Creek ravine and the slope edges, grading gets extra attention so water sheds away from the house and the bank.

Questions

Straight answers

Why are my front steps in Waterdown pulling away from the house?

Usually because they were never on footings below the frost line. Clay heaves when it freezes, so steps that only sit on the ground move each winter while the house stays put. Rebuilt steps get footings to about 1.2 metres or are tied to the structure, so they move with the house.

We just closed on a new build in Waterdown. When can we pour a front walk?

After the builder has set the final grade and the lot has had a season to settle. Newer surveys sit on disturbed fill that keeps moving for a year or two along a new foundation.

Can you rebuild the walkway and the steps together?

Yes. We rebuild walkways and steps, and the written quote can show the walkway and the steps separately.

How much do new concrete steps cost in Waterdown?

Steps are quoted by the job. The number of risers, the total height, whether they need footings, the tear-out of the old set and the finish drive the cost. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
