Newmarket has two kinds of ground and two ages of house, and a front walk or set of steps depends on both. The south edge of town is on the Oak Ridges Moraine, sand and gravel that drains fast. The north and west sit on heavy clay till, the stony, silty soil that geologists named the Newmarket Till after this town. See our Newmarket page for everything else we do in town.
The full method for footings, riser heights, mix and thickness is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page covers what Newmarket ground and Newmarket homes change about that job.
Sand or clay: the base decides the walkway
A freestanding walkway sits on a compacted granular base, with 100 mm (4 in.) of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete on top. The south edge of town is sand and gravel that drains fast. The north and west are clay till that holds meltwater. We decide the base and slope on site, after we see your ground.
Steps and porches on the Main Street heritage blocks
The blocks around historic Main Street hold the oldest homes in town.
New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down, so they do not sink into the loose backfill beside the foundation.
Low ground near the Holland River and newer surveys
Toward the Holland River the land is low and the water table climbs after the spring melt, so on those lots we take extra care with the slope, so water does not collect at the door. If the basement already takes on water, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing first.
In the newer surveys, such as Stonehaven-Wyndham, Glenway Estates, Summerhill and Woodland Hill, fresh fill keeps settling for a season or two, so we usually suggest waiting through a full spring before we pour a new walk, then we check the base.
Newmarket is a long drive north, reached by the 400 and 404, so we book jobs here into planned trips and give you a real date, not a same-day truck. We reply to every request within one business day.
