Parging in Waterdown
We re-parge the exposed foundation band on Waterdown homes: the grey strip of mortar above grade that cracks, sounds hollow and comes off in sheets. We strip it back to sound material and bond the new coat so it stays. The quote is free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Waterdown has two kinds of foundation. The old village around Mill Street and Dundas Street has century homes and heritage streets. The surveys around it, including the Waterdown Bay lands on the east side, are newer. See our Waterdown page for everything else we do in town.
The full method, from bonding agent to coat thickness to mesh, is on our parging page. This page is about why parging fails on Waterdown walls, and what we do so the new coat lasts.
Why parging comes off Waterdown foundations
Parging is a sacrificial skin. It takes the weather and the road salt so the wall behind it does not have to.
Waterdown sits on the Niagara Escarpment edge, on clay over limestone. Clay holds water against a foundation, and the highways nearby bring road salt. When water gets between the coat and the wall and freezes, it pushes the coat off in sheets. The old coat goes a patch at a time: hollow when you tap it, grey flakes in the garden bed, bare block where it has already gone. Painting over it seals moisture in instead of out, and the next freeze works underneath where you cannot see it.
The old village: older walls
Around Mill Street, Dundas Street and Main, many homes are older and have weathered for decades. Repair and parging on older foundations is the usual work in the old village.
We sound the whole exposed band and strip every hollow or loose patch back to solid material, then clean off dust and old paint. The wall is dampened and given a bonding agent, because fresh mortar will not hold a dry, dirty face on its own. Fibreglass mesh goes over patches, filled voids and changes in material.
If the parging keeps failing in the same spot, or water is coming in below grade, the coat is not the whole problem. We tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Waterdown.
Newer lots: builder fill that keeps settling
On the newer surveys, the ground along the foundation is disturbed builder backfill that keeps settling for a season or two after closing. A foundation band that has cracked or chipped there is worth a look. We check whether the wall itself has moved before we parge, so a new coat is not laid over a crack that is still opening. Then we give you a free written quote.
Booking a Waterdown parging job
Waterdown books onto our Hamilton-area routes through the season, so a parging job rides the regular weekly schedule. Fresh parging needs frost-free weather to cure, so the work runs in the warm months, not late in the year. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
My parging is coming off in sheets. How urgent is that?
Water that gets behind the coat freezes and pops whole sheets off the wall, so more comes off each winter. Re-parging is a small job, and we treat it like a real one: we strip everything loose, bond the new coat and give you a written quote.
Why is the parging on my older Waterdown house crumbling?
Clay holds water against the foundation, and freeze-thaw pushes the coat off. Painting over a failing coat traps moisture. We strip back to sound material and bond a fresh coat so it holds.
What does parging cost in Waterdown?
We do not quote a flat rate. The cost moves with the prep the wall needs, the height of the exposed band, whether it needs mesh and the access. The visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
Can I just paint over the crumbling parging?
No. Paint seals moisture in instead of out, and the next freeze works underneath where you cannot see it. Plan on stripping back to sound material before anything new goes on.
