Delhi is a town of long-held houses from the tobacco decades: storey-and-a-half brick and frame homes from the forties through the seventies, many of them on block foundations that are now reaching the age where things let go.
The ground under them is not clay. Delhi sits on some of the deepest sand in Norfolk County, which drains fast. Where a downspout or a low spot concentrates runoff, that sand can be carried off grain by grain.

Block foundations from the tobacco decades
Much of Delhi's housing stands on block foundations from the mid-century decades. Block cracks along its mortar joints in a stair-step pattern.
