Concrete Walkways & Steps in Stoney Creek

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and entrances across Stoney Creek, from worn steps on an older Old Town home to a new front path on a mountain subdivision lot. Both halves of town sit on clay, so steps that attach to a house get footings below the frost line and a compacted granular base. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Front steps and the path to the door are the concrete Stoney Creek homeowners use every day, and winter is hard on them. The lake throws freeze-thaw cycles and snow load at every winter, and road salt finishes the job on cheap concrete.

The town splits two ways. Below the escarpment, in the Old Town and on the lakeside streets, the homes are older. Up on the mountain, west of Centennial Parkway, the subdivisions are newer, and the walkway is often a job left for the landscaping stage. We quote both in writing, from one cracked panel to a full entrance rebuild.

The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm walkway, the footings and the riser heights, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Stoney Creek's ground and homes change.

Lakeside clay and the footing

Steps that attach to a house get footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down, or are tied into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail. Below the escarpment, the lakeshore plain runs to clay near the water, with a high water table. Wet clay is ground that frost lifts, so steps without a proper base can tip and pull away from the house.

The low ground near the creek and the shore holds water longest, so the slope at the foot of the steps matters more there. We slope the concrete so meltwater runs off instead of freezing under it.

Clay till and karst on the mountain

Above the escarpment, the subdivisions sit on clay till over limestone. Clay heaves on a thin base, so the base gets the same care up here. In pockets near the Eramosa Karst, the limestone is fractured, and surface water can go into the rock in ways a flat lot does not show.

We check how the front of the house drains at the free site visit and set the base and the slope to suit. For a new lot we pour a wider front walkway, a side path to the backyard or a landing on a compacted granular base.

Older steps: repair, relevel or rebuild?

In the Old Town and in the old fruit-country pockets at Winona, Fruitland and Vinemount, a century home can sit beside new infill. Old steps tip, settle and scale from road salt. Depending on how far gone they are, we either lift them back into place, resurface them, or pour new ones on footings and a compacted base.

We tell you which one you have at the free site visit. The written quote names each piece so you can compare it with anyone else's.

Questions

Straight answers

Why are the front steps on my Stoney Creek home sinking and flaking?

Two things, usually together. Steps on wet clay without a proper base heave with frost, so they tip and settle. Road salt scales the surface. Depending on how far gone they are, we either lift them back into place, resurface them, or rebuild them on footings and a compacted base.

Does the karst rock on the Stoney Creek mountain change a walkway or steps?

It can, in the pockets near the Eramosa Karst where the limestone is fractured and surface water goes into the rock. We check how the lot drains at the site visit and build the base and slope to suit.

Can you rebuild the walkway and steps together?

Yes. We plan the footing, rise, drainage and finish together, and the written quote names each piece.

How much do new concrete steps cost in Stoney Creek?

Steps are quoted by the job, not by area. The number of risers, the total height, whether it needs footings and the condition of what is torn out drive the cost. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
