Stamped vs Plain Concrete: How They Compare Over Time
Updated October 2026
Under the surface, stamped and plain concrete are the same pour, in the same 32 MPa air-entrained mix. The difference over time is the surface. Stamped concrete keeps its colour and pattern only if you reseal it every two to three years in Southern Ontario. If you want the look and not the upkeep, a stamped border around a plain field or an exposed aggregate finish is the middle road.
Stamped and plain concrete start as the same pour. The question that matters is what happens to the surface in year three, year ten and year twenty. That is where the two part ways.
What is the same underneath
We pour both in the same 32 MPa air-entrained mix as our plain flatwork. Stamped concrete adds two extra trades on top: colour worked into the surface, then a pattern pressed in while the concrete is still soft. You can read how that works on our stamped and decorative concrete page.
What changes on the surface
Stamped concrete looks like slate, flagstone, cobblestone or wood plank. The colour sits right at the surface, and so do the sharp pattern edges. Both depend on the sealer.
Colour and sealer over the years
The acrylic sealer is what gives stamped concrete its depth. It wears under sun, salt and snow shovels. Once it is gone, the colour fades and the surface starts drinking water.
In Southern Ontario, plan on resealing every two to three years. Our guide to sealing and caring for stamped concrete has the routine for salt and snow.
Cracks, joints and repairs
All exterior concrete in Ontario wants to crack. The work is deciding where. On a stamped slab, we cut control joints along the pattern’s grout lines, so shrinkage cracks land inside lines you cannot see.
The joint layout is part of the stamping plan. A workmanship failure is covered by the lifetime warranty on labour, which is on every written quote.
Cost: what drives the gap
We do not publish flat rates. Stamped is an upgrade on the slab you were already buying. How much it adds depends on the pattern, how many colours are in play, and how much hand-detailing the layout needs. Our post on what drives the cost of stamped concrete goes through the factors.
The middle road
You do not have to choose all or nothing.
- A stamped border around a broom or exposed aggregate field gives you much of the look for a fraction of the upgrade. On a driveway, that can be what keeps the project sensible.
- Exposed aggregate gives texture and stone character with less upkeep than full stamping.
Which one fits
Pick stamped when the look matters, for example on a patio that will be seen every day, and you are happy to put the reseal date on a calendar. Pick plain when the slab is out of sight. Pick the middle road when you want some of both.
If the upkeep sounds like more than you want, say so at the quote. We would rather pour the right surface than the fancier one.
Get both options quoted
A free site visit and a written quote on your actual job is the fair way to compare. We can quote the plain slab and the stamped version side by side, with the pattern and colours named, and give you the resealing schedule in writing. Is stamped concrete poured differently from plain concrete?
The mix is the same: the 32 MPa air-entrained mix we pour for plain flatwork. Stamping adds colour worked into the surface and a pattern pressed in while the concrete is still soft.
Does stamped concrete crack more than plain concrete?
Any exterior concrete in Ontario wants to crack, and the job is to decide where. On a stamped slab we cut control joints along the pattern's grout lines so shrinkage cracks land in lines you can't see.
Can I get the stamped look without stamping the whole slab?
Yes. A stamped border around a broom or exposed aggregate field gives you much of the look with a smaller area to stamp and reseal. Exposed aggregate on its own gives texture and stone character with less upkeep.
How much more does stamped concrete cost than plain?
It is an upgrade on the slab you were already buying, and how much it adds depends on the pattern, the number of colours and the hand-detailing in the layout. We do not publish flat rates. A free written quote itemizes the slab, the colour, the stamping and the sealing so you can see each part.
