Best Time of Year for Concrete Work in Ontario
Updated October 2026
For outdoor concrete in Ontario, late spring through early fall is the best time. Concrete needs temperatures above freezing to cure, the pouring season runs roughly April through November, and the middle of it is when the crews are busiest. Spring is the best time to ask for a quote, because summer dates fill by late spring. Fall works for a driveway if the pour has time to cure before the first freeze. Basement waterproofing is different: exterior digging needs unfrozen ground, so the dry months of summer and early fall suit it best.
Concrete does not care what the calendar says. It cares about temperature, water and time. In Ontario that makes the season a real part of the plan. Here is how each season changes the work, and how to pick the right one for your job.
The short answer by season
- Spring. The best time to get the quote done. The pouring season starts around April, and the summer dates are often gone by late spring.
- Summer. The easiest weather for flatwork. Heat and rain still move a pour, and the crews are at their busiest.
- Fall. Good for a driveway if it can cure before the freeze. Also the time to deal with basement water before the ground locks up.
- Winter. Outdoor pours are the exception, not the plan. Winter is the time to ask for quotes and to book spring work.
Spring: quote early, pour when the ground is ready
Concrete needs temperatures above freezing to cure, so the Ontario season runs from roughly April through November. A cold spring opens it later. A quote in March or April gives you time to choose the finish and the layout, and it holds you a slot before summer fills. Booking early does not mean pouring early. The crew still waits for ground and weather that suit the job. The guide to booking a summer pour covers that side in more detail.
Spring is also when winter shows its damage. If your slab is flaking or cracked, the spring crack inspection guide helps you decide what needs work.
Summer: dependable weather, crowded schedule
Summer is the easiest time for a patio or a concrete driveway. It is also the busiest. Three things still move a pour: hard rain on fresh concrete, extreme heat that dries the surface before it cures, and the first signs of fall frost. A crew that reschedules around them is protecting your slab.
If you want a concrete patio for this summer, the quote has to happen in spring.
Fall: a driveway can work, with a cure plan
A fall pour has less time to cure before freeze-thaw starts. Concrete gains strength more slowly in cold weather, so keep vehicles off longer than the usual 48 hours and keep heavy loads off for a full week. How long before you can drive on a new driveway has the basics.
The first winter matters most. Keep all salt and de-icer off a new slab and use sand for grip. Protecting concrete poured this fall explains how. For an older slab, sealing before winter slows the water and salt that cause scaling.
Fall is also the right season for basement water. The October and November rains saturate the ground, and exterior repairs need unfrozen ground. Once the freeze sets in, the window to dig closes until spring. Fall basement waterproofing prep lists what to check.
Winter: plan, do not pour
Once overnight lows head toward zero, fresh concrete cannot gain strength normally. A late pour is possible with cold-weather measures, but they add cost and risk, and sometimes the right answer is to wait. Winter is a good time to settle the scope and book spring work.
Water in the basement is the exception. From October to March, if water is actively coming in, say so in the quote form. Urgent water problems are seen first. We reply within one business day. What to do in the first hour is in water in your basement during a thaw.
Which season fits which job
- Driveway or walkway. Spring to early fall, with the cure finished well before snow and salt.
- Patio. Quote in spring so you can use it that summer.
- Basement waterproofing. Dry months, when the ground can be dug. Do not wait for a leak to force it.
- Repair and resurfacing. Spring shows what winter did. Fall is the time to seal and protect.
Getting a quote for your season
Tell us what you plan and when you want it, and we will book a look. The quote is free and in writing, there is no deposit to get a price, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job. We do not print prices here, because size, finish, base, access and season all move the number. Union-certified crews do the work, and a lifetime warranty on labour stands behind it. Ask for your free written quote.
What is the best month to pour concrete in Ontario?
There is no single best month. Late spring to early fall gives dependable temperatures above freezing, which is what curing needs. The pouring season runs roughly April through November, and the edges of it carry more weather risk. Ask for your quote in spring so you can get a sensible slot.
Can you pour concrete in winter in Ontario?
Pouring later in the year is possible with cold-weather measures like blankets and heated enclosures, but those add cost and risk. When the weather will not let a slab cure safely, the honest answer is to wait for spring.
Is fall a good time for a new concrete driveway?
It can be, if the slab has time to cure before the freeze. A fall slab gains strength more slowly in cold weather and then faces its first winter early. Plan to keep salt off it for that first winter.
When is the best time to waterproof a basement?
When the ground is not frozen and not saturated. Exterior work needs the ground to be dug, so the dry months suit it. Water coming in right now is different: say so when you ask for your quote and it can be flagged urgent.
Is it cheaper to do concrete work in the off season?
We do not publish prices, and we cannot promise an off-season saving. Size, finish, base condition, access and the season all shape the number. A free written quote gives you the real one.
